Good Schools Alliance (GSA) supports the Arthur Foot Academy (AFA) - Fostering a culture of service and giving within the partner schools of GSA. This furthers the 4S Philosophy —Service, Skill, Sports, Study— and promotes a culture of Service, providing students an opportunity to experience the 6 C's: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Character, and Citizenship
This 27th of October 2024 holds special significance for us, reminiscent of the meaningful 27th of October in 1935, when the first Headmaster of The Doon School spoke about an "aristocracy of service." Today, we are committed to the joy of giving, inspired by the work and lives of Arthur E. Foot, John Martyn, and R.L. Holdsworth of The Doon School.
Every year, GSA hosts the My Good School Retreat
Students from different schools meet once or twice a year to participate in hands-on service activities.
These Retreats go beyond typical educational excursions by focusing on building character and citizenship through shared projects that address societal needs.
How we make this possible?
Resource Sharing: Donate surplus materials like books, gadgets, and educational tools.
Best Practices: Share effective teaching methods and educational innovations.
Volunteering: Offer students opportunities to serve in roles like teaching, coaching, or administration.
Skills Showcase: Highlight student talents in sports, arts, academics, and more.
Community Development: Engage students in projects that support and build communities.
Action & Reflection: Encourage hands-on service and personal reflection on social impact.
The way forward:
Student-led Campaigns
Campaigns include initiatives like book collection drives, gadget donations, water purifier installations, solar panel setups, and the development of play areas.
Students work on understanding the specific needs of partner communities and take meaningful actions to meet those needs.
Volunteering Opportunities
Students take on roles such as teaching assistants, coaches, accountants, or administrative helpers at partner schools.
This contributes to character building and aids in professional learning and career development.
Community Projects
Plan and execute community development projects, such as building infrastructure (e.g., classrooms, libraries), improving healthcare access, or creating educational tools.
These projects are collaborative, encourage teamwork and real-world problem-solving.
Online Resource Library
Develop a shared digital platform where schools can access and share educational materials, lesson plans, and other resources to improve teaching and learning experiences.
Reflection and Feedback
Each initiative incorporates reflection sessions where students assess the impact of their service, discussing what they’ve learned and how they’ve grown from the experience.
Feedback from partner schools and communities guide us.
Embracing the Joy of Giving
Let us unite to honour the legacy of the first Headmaster of The Doon School, Arthur E. Foot, by embracing his vision shared on 27th October 1935. Together, we can promote the #JoyOfLearning as the greatest gift we can offer to future generations.
